Description

Barbera is Giacomo Bologna and Giacomo Bologna is Barbera: he owes the fortune of the great winemaking company he created to this grape, brought to its maximum expression by the Bricco dell’Uccellone.

A peculiar story the one of Uccellone: it was a derogatory nickname given to a woman who lived on a hill close to the vineyard of Rocchetta Tanaro, characterized by a bird’s beak nose and a dark, monotonous, black clothing: the nickname spread in the village and Giacomo Bologna, who was second to none in terms of sympathy and playfulness, took the inspiration back in 1982 to name his first Barbera Riserva aged in barrique, the first of a long successful series that changed the destiny of this grape nationwide and across the borders.

Medium-textured soils with sand and clay able to deliver wines with an intense aromatic and gustatory spectrum: this is the terroir of Rocchetta Tanaro, close to Asti, where Braida’s vineyards are located at 160 meters above se alevel altitude facing South/South-West. It was Giacomo Bologna’s intuition the use of barriques to refine the Barbera, a first-time revolutionary experiment that completely changed this wine, enhancing its ageing potential.

Of course, this is still a Barbera and it must be appreciated as such: a convivial, generous, affable and reliable wine which knows how to express itself in a broad an complex fashion for the most demanding taster, offering a wide spectrum of aromas ranging from red berries to sweet spices, to undergrowth and balsamic notes. It might recall other Piedmontese wines (and not only) for an austere, refined and classy behavior, but we find it hard not to think that, underneath it, there is still that“naughty”Barbera where all started. 2017 was not an easy year with very high temperatures in the summer following an unstable spring, with few frosts towards the end of April. Low yields but very high quality, the 2017 vintage is ready for to be collected, especially in large formats like Magnum and Double Magnum.
