Description

This is the most famous wine from Castellare di Castellina, a red made with Sangiovese (85%) and Malvasia Nera (15%), which ages for 24 months in small oak barrels and for as many more months in the bottle. It is a thick ruby colour and has a nose encompassing blood oranges, violet petals, cloves, blackberries, blueberries, spices and a touch of rhubarb. The palate is incredibly long, a meeting of tannic texture, softness and savoury closure.

It was Luigi Veronelli who suggested to the owner Paolo Panerai, in 1977, that he name the wine after the church of San Niccolò, which stands right next to the vineyard. ‘I sodi’ (the firm ones) was added later, to indicate the structure and consistency of the soil. It has been named as one of the reds that one must try at least once in a lifetime in the Wine Spectator Top 100 list on several occasions. An iconic wine.
