Brunello di Montalcino Campo del Drago 2015 Magnum
Here, on one-and-a-half hectares located about 450 metres above sea level, on the highest parcel of the Capanna vineyard with the best exposure (from which the Brunello di Montalcino that is the “basis” of Castiglion del Bosco comes), the Campo del Drago cru was born. It owes its name to the ditch located at the foot of the vineyard, which is in the shape of a dragon’s tail, but it owes its complexity and refinement to the perfect climatic conditions described above, the presence of marl in the ground and a winemaking process, maturation and ageing characterised by great patience, as the oenologist Cecilia Leoneschi has stated in an interview. In order for everything to run flawlessly, one must wait calmly for the product to complete each phase of the process: 20-25 days of fermentation in steel tanks, about two years of maturation, partially in barriques and partially in 30-50 hectolitre barrels, and a further six months in cement.
As we know, 2015 produced a five-star vintage for Brunello. In the vineyards of Castiglion del Bosco, too, the climatic conditions were ideal for a perfect ripening of the grapes: a rainy spring followed by a hot and dry summer and then large temperature fluctuations in September between day and night.
The result is a wine with great structure and personality that delights the nose with notes of undergrowth and dark berries, while on the palate it surprises with acidity and minerality. A clearly present and refined tannic texture accompanies the gustatory-olfactory pleasure with great persistence and foreshadows wonderful ageing capacity. Approximately 6,000 bottles are available, and it has been classified as being among the 100 best Italian wines, according to James Suckling.
