Le Pergole Torte 2018
Produced for the first time with the 1977 vintage, Le Pergole Torte was the first pure Sangiovese vinified in the Radda area in Chianti.
The grapes come from the historic vineyards of the Montevertine company, planted between 1968 and 1999, covering about 2.5 hectares within the 18 owned by the company.
Since 1981, together with the company’s other wines, Le Pergole Torte has left the Chianti guidelines behind to continue its oenological journey outside of the standards set by the consortium.
Since 1982, the labels have been designed by the artist Alberto Manfredi, a longtime friend of Sergio’s, who liked to depict stylised, attractive ladies’ faces with simple brushstrokes. Since his death, his drawings, which are preserved in the old archives, have been used every year to remember him.
When you sample this Super Tuscan the colour emerges as a ruby red – quite light from the chromatic point of view – with light garnet reflections.
This is a complex Sangiovese, and we perceive it in the nose: from notes of red fruits, which recall the characteristic blood orange of the area, as well as pepper and cloves, to the delicate notes of cocoa and toasty notes. The finish is fresh, with a hint of graphite.
The sip is elegant and fine, but also powerful and decisive. The refined structure encompasses fresh and soft, savoury and velvety contrasts, from which no winner will ever emerge. The winners, really, are those who taste it and are captivated by its great beauty.
