Avignonesi

Tuscany
Virginie Saveris is a former Belgian lawyer who arrived in Tuscany in 2007 and fell so deeply in love with Tuscany and its wines that she decided, two years later, to take over the historic Avignonesi winery (Montepulciano) from the family that founded it. The two values that guide her are minimal intervention and maximum sustainability for the entire production process.
Her dream was to create a winery that would be capable of producing authentic wines that were a true expression of the identity of the Montepulciano area and that would fully respect the environment.
Through her passion and tenacity, Virginie and her international team of winemakers and agronomists have made this dream come true. Today, Avignonesi – with its 175 hectares of vineyards located between Montepulciano and Cortona – is the largest winery to operate biodynamically in Italy. In 2016, it was certified as organic.
The non-interventionist approach at Avignonesi, which has banished chemistry from the vineyard and cellar, and which deeply respects the land and its fruits, has given rise to extraordinary wines, such as 50 & 50, and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice – already great classics of Tuscan and Italian oenology.

  • Part of the Alliance Vinum project that sees six of the most important and historic producers of Montepulciano working together to develop each one an own Nobile cru in order to rediscover and relaunch this wine, so important in the Tuscan and Italian winemaking tradition, Poggetto di Sopra from Avignonesi, produced in 2016 for the second vintage, best interprets the purpose of the project, proposing itself as a new reference for the Nobile intended as a wine that stands out for its elegance and finesse, which interprets well the territory from which it comes with an extraordinary aging potential.

Avignonesi has dedicated to this project a pure Sangiovese selected area of its historic estate on the Argiano hill, where almost forty-year-old vines insist on silty and calcareous soils alternated by veins of blue clays, at about 300 meters on sea level.

The 2016 vintage is universally recognized as exceptional even in the area of Montepulciano. A dry and mild winter was followed by a spring with below average temperatures and a lot of rainfall, offset by a hot and sunny summer ending with a very breezy September that allowed the grapes to reach harvest between the middle of September and the first days of October with perfect ripeness.

At tasting stage the Poggetto di Sotto shows a ruby color with light garnet reflections, introducing to the nose a complex bouquet starting with hints of dried violet followed by red fruit such as plum and cherry and then by clear herbaceous hints of undergrowth and musk together with lavender, thyme and sage. At the sip it is powerful and elegant, with a remarkable softness given by a silky tannin joined by a fresh note that is well balanced by warmth and that envelopes the mouth, with a persistent finish followed by a pleasant aftertaste of coconut and licorice thanking to the aging in wood.

With a limited production of only 3500 bottles and an excellent response from international critics already, Avignonesi’s Poggetto di Sopra takes a historic wine of the Tuscan tradition to the highest levels, interpreting in the best way a territory where quality viticulture is rooted by hundreds of years and that contributes by right to making Italian enology great in the world.

  • 50&50 is the culmination of the longest-standing collaboration worldwide between two independent winemakers: Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Capannelle in Chianti.
The process involves separate winemaking in each winery, followed by a meeting between winemakers to agree on the proportions of San Giovese and Merlot in the blend. Finally, the wine is aged entirely by Capannelle or Avignonesi in alternating years, and then divided equally and bottled and distributed by each winemaker separately.

The first 50&50 vintage dates back to 1988, a year that yielded an extraordinary harvest for Tuscany. Blending 50% of Sangiovese di Capannelle with  50% of Merlot di Avignonesi created a wine that became a legend, bottled. Its colour is a luminous ruby red. The Sangiovese immediately releases the scent of violets and rose petals, followed by notes of red and black berries and dark cherries that mingle with hints of sweet tobacco, Mediterranean herbs and a touch of balsamico.
On the palate it is rich and has notes of fruit with hints of liquorice and vanilla, with remarkable retro-olfactory persistence. Fresh and with velvety tannins, which are counterbalanced by the typical softness of a Tuscanized Merlot, the finish is protracted and fulfilling.

  • Vin Santo is the best-known sweet wine from the Tuscan tradition, dating back to the Renaissance. To produce both Vin Santo and Occhio di Pernice, Avignonesi has always used the same yeast that has been handed down for generations, which gives it its ethereal flavour. During a lengthy ageing process, more than half of the precious liquid is lost.

One hundred percent a dense, alchemical and gentle blackthorn, its colour is reminiscent of raw garnet, mysterious and bewitching like its bouquet; complex and ample with hints of dates, dried figs, black cherries and candied citrus fruits, sweet spices, white pepper and chestnut honey.

In the mouth the sweetness is supported by freshness; it is spicy with hints of candied red fruits, plum preserves and an almost caramelised finish, with endless persistence. Every sip is a surprise, an explosion of feeling.

This elegant wood casket lends itself to being gifted on important occasions and allows you to taste this vintage twice, giving it time to evolve so you can fully grasp its surprising evolution.
