Biondi Santi

Biondi Santi

At the end of the twentieth century, Wine Spectator decided to draw up the list of twelve wines to remember from all of the twentieth century, only one was the chosen Italian label: the Brunello di Montalcino Biondi Santi 1955 Riserva, or the extraordinary vintage of a wine which, with good reason, is part of Italian winemaking mythology and beyond.
This alone would be enough to summarize the uniqueness of the Biondi Santi family and its Greppo Estate, inextricably linked to the history of the Brunello appellation.
It all began in the mid-nineteenth century, when Clemente Santi – a little pioneer, a little alchemist – experimented with new oenological techniques and obtained the first awards for his “chosen red wine”, so much so that he was awarded at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1867. From then on it is a succession of talented and inspired figures who, generation after generation, have worked to make Brunello the perfect expression of the Montalcino territory.
Ferruccio Biondi Santi – Clemente’s nephew – is the true inventor of Brunello, the one who first selects and vinifies a Sangiovese clone in Montalcino; to his son Tancredi, on the other hand, we recognize the intuition of the practice of filling old reserves with wine from the same vintage (in 1927 for the first time, for Riserve 1888 and 1891). It is then up to another legendary figure, Franco Biondi Santi, who died in 2013 and considered the keeper of the Brunello tradition, the burden and the honor of taking over the reins of the company and bringing its production from 4 to 25 hectares. Today Tenuta Greppo is guided with a sure hand and unchanged passion by Jacopo and his son Tancredi Biondi Santi

  • “Nature can make great things, we just have to to wait”: a quote by Franco Biondi Santi, who this vintage reserve is dedicated to. This wine is a legend that has been re-told year after year since the first label bearing the word Brunello was printed. The riserva version has always been produced by the Greppo vineyards, using only vines that are at least 25 years old and only in vintages considered exceptional.

In the glass it is a beautiful, bright ruby red.

The nose contains complex and varied hints that begin with violets, dark berries, cherries, plums and a touch of aromatic herbs, liquorice, cinnamon, ginger, tobacco and a touch of roasting. The first sip reveals a taste of glycerine, even though it is also austere, mineral, spicy and very long.

  • Biondi Santi’s Brunello di Montalcino is a legendary wine, famous throughout the world, which has its roots in a distant past. A myth that is perpetuated from year to year, since the first label bearing the word Brunello came out and which, from harvest to harvest, renews the vision that inspired Clemente Santi in creating the first legendary Brunello more than century ago.

Over the decades little has changed in the style of the wine, much in the style of the cellar, which has always been the custodian of a tradition that is preserved with respect and rigor, demanding a lot from their vineyards, their soil and their microclimate and then applying the same rigor in the cellar during the aging phases, which are generally more lasting than required by the DOCG rules.

The 2015 vintage lives is universally recognized as exceptional: although characterized by great irregularities, with significant differences in terms of quality of the yields in the various sides, it produced wines of excellent finish. The weather brought so much heat between spring and summer with little rainfall between May and August, supporting the ripening of the grapes and bringing the grapes to perfect ripeness on the occasion of the harvest, which began on 21 September.

In tasting the Brunello 2015 shows a ruby color with slight garnet reflections, accompanied by a broad olfactory bouquet that ranges from notes of sweet and crunchy cherry to thyme, rosemary and helichrysum, with some hints of tobacco. At the sip it reveals a complex and refined personality, it is warm, delicate, with soft but full-bodied tannins and a freshness that makes it alive and clean in the mouth, closing with an endless persistence that surprises for a marked acidity.

Today, as more than a hundred years ago, Brunello di Montalcino Biondi Santi excites already in glimpsing the label, and then enhances the expectations of the taster to a magic that is revealed in the nose and in the mouth.

History in the glass, this is Biondi Santi: even more so considering that the 2015 vintage has been released for the first time in the history of this winery in large formats, whose very limited Magnums are the greedy prey of the most inveterate collectors.

This was the first red monovarietal in Tuscany and is a wine that has its roots in the last century, when the first wine labelled Brunello, vintage 1888, came out of the Fattoria Il Greppo. This casket conveys just what an iconic wine the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (2011, 2006, 1995) is.

The 2011 vintage is of a bright, ruby-red colour. The nose is a blend of the scents of flowers, violets and black berries, with a touch of aromatic herbs, cinnamon and tobacco. Its evolution in the glass seems never-ending. It is mineral on the palate, with a good tannic texture.

The 2006 vintage was the fruit of an exceptional year, given a 5-star rating by the Brunello di Montalcino Protection Consortium. Of an intense red tending to garnet red, the bouquet is one of great complexity and elegance: there are hints of fruits and red flowers that emerge immediately, and which are accompanied by sensations of vanilla and rose potpourri, with balsamic touches. The taste is harmonious, fresh, with great structure and balanced tannins. This is a wine of great finesse and depth that fully expresses the possibilities of the Sangiovese varietal.

1995 is also a 5-star vintage. A garnet red tending towards orange, it is intense and rich, with hints of vanilla and red fruit compote. It gradually opens in the glass, providing tertiary sensations of balsamic, resin and wet pine forests. Harmonious, savoury, full-bodied and structured, this wine is warm and strikes the correct balance between tannins and acidity; it is very persistent. It provides a satisfying sip as it evolves that does not lose the strength typical of this grape.

The Biondi Santi Company recommends decanting Brunello 8 hours before serving.
