Ferrari

Trentino Alto Adige

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to Giulio Ferrari the credit for having ennobled Italian sparkling wine. Already in the early twentieth century, in fact, Giulio was chasing the dream of developing a product in Trentino that would have nothing to envy French champagne. Hence his intuitive move to attempt the winning combination of Chardonnay and Trento, enhanced by an almost obsessive focus on quality.
The successes of the winery’s other most famous labels, including the Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore, must be attributed to the Lunelli family, who in the person of Bruno acquired the company in the 1950s and with the skills and dedication of his children – Franco, Gino and Mauro – reached its current level of excellence.
Now the third generation of the Lunelli family sees siblings Marcello, Matteo, Camilla and Alessandro at the helm: “The Italian art of living” synthesises their shared values, such as the continuous pursuit of excellence, a deep bond with the territory, the right compromise between innovation and tradition … and style!

  • The modernity of Trento Doc is expressed by one of the last born of the Ferrari family, Perlè Zero: part of theiconic Perlè family, it expresses the essence of mountain Chardonnay declined in a pas dosé version, the result of a skilful work of blending base wines attributable to several vintages and which takes its name from the year of bottling.
Produced for the first time in the 2010 vintage with grapes from the 2009, 2008 and 2006 harvests, it reaches its fifth edition after six years spent on the lees in the splendid labyrinth of galleries located below the headquarters of Cantine Ferrari in Ponte di Ravina, just out of Trento city, confirming the vocation of excellent sparkling wine to sustain long ageing then fascinating with elegance, richness and personality.
With a brilliant straw yellow color with golden reflections and an elegant, numerous and persistent perlage, Perlè Zero immediately transmits a clear verticality to the nose, showing notes of grapefruit interspersed with pineapple, apricot, mountain hay and hints of spice that blend with iodized notes and aromatic herbs.
Considering the wide olfactory spectrum, the sip can only be in line with expectations, opening to great freshness and minerality, traits that markedly distinguish the Ferrari style, enriched by a long persistence and a closure with a slightly citrusy and spicy return. Surprising cleanliness in the mouth once swallowed: it’s impossible not to be tempted by another glass.
For some years now a new key reference for Ferrari production, Perlè Zero has been receiving more and more attention and success in a varied public, which appreciates a trending reduction in the sugar content of sparkling wines and that continually seeks the truest expression of individual grapes: the one of mountain Chardonnay, of which Cantina Ferrari is a master in Italy and in the whole world.

  • For fans of sparkling Chardonnay, this is certainly a cult classic, and for many others an icon and a wine that is representative of the whole territory. The fact that this pure Chardonnay spends an average 10 years on the lees helps it develop its unique elegance and structure – from the visual, with its exceptionally fine and persistent perlage – to the gustatory-olfactory dimension, with its legendary minerality and freshness.

The story begins with Mauro Lunelli (one of Bruno’s three sons who took over the company from Giulio Ferrari), who conserved special vintages for about eight years. Once he shared these with his brothers Franco and Gino, in 1980, they created the Riserva del Fondatore: a speciality to be produced only during the best vintages, dedicated to Giulio Ferrari. The story continues to unfold with successes and awards, which raise this label to the Olympus of the world of bubbly, on a par with the best champagnes in the world, according to international critics.
Acacia and hawthorn stand out in the complexity of the bouquet of this vintage, which then moves towards more fruity, citrus notes, to continue with the tertiary notes of hazelnuts, almonds and white chocolate. The taste immediately surprises with its harmony: it is sumptuous, complex and very fresh, and brings us back to the olfactory scents, with incredibly persistence. A vintage with a great personality that is ready to amaze us now and to continue to evolve for at least another 10 years.

  • One of the last-born at Ferrari, this extra brut Blanc de Blanc makes its debut with what was, for several reasons, a historic vintage: 2002. Besides being a qualitatively memorable year for all French and Italian sparkling wines, 2002 was also the year the Ferrari winery celebrated its centenary and the fiftieth anniversary of the Lunelli management. In short, what better harvest to inaugurate a special wine? The Lunelli Riserva in fact shares grapes with the Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore (Chardonnay grown in Villa Margon), but ages in large Austrian oak barrels for at least seven years, acquiring complexity and extraordinary softness.

As expected, the olfactory profile is quite complex: the expected bread crust leaves room for ripe, exotic fruit, and then for tertiary notes of coffee and almond.

The sip is round and enveloping, and alternates between fruity and toasted notes and lengthens into a very persistent finish. Bruno Lunelli would be proud.

The excellence of Trento Doc in the rosé version can be interpreted only by the so-called Riserva del Fondatore, aka Giulio Ferrari, the now legendary Trentino sparkling wine made great by the Cantine Ferrari and which continues to make high-altitude sparkling wine more and more important.

Produced for the first time in the 2006 vintage then followed by the 2007 and 2008 harvests, it reaches its third edition after eleven years spent on the lees in the splendid labyrinth of galleries located below the headquarters of Cantine Ferrari in Ponte di Ravina, just out of Trento, confirming the vocation of those sparkling wines of excellence to sustain long aging thus fascinating with a unique personality, structure and complexity.

With a brilliant salmon color with coppery reflections and a fine, numerous and persistent perlage, Giulio Ferrari Rosè immediately transmits a vibrant intensity, with a succession of citrus notes of orange, fruity notes of strawberry and tamarind, spicy angostura and iodium and limestone minerality that build together, complementarily, an olfactory bouquet of absolute excellence. Considering the premises, the sip can only be in line with expectations, opening to great freshness and minerality, traits that markedly distinguish the Ferrari style, always balanced by a softness that emerges to close the sip, specifically typical of the Giulio Ferrari style. The closure is incredibly persistent, always fresh and clean, inviting to a new glass. With a deliberately limited production to best express the mountain Pinot Noir, Giulio Ferrari Rosè is confirmed as the most typical expression of the high-altitude terroir in which the best grapes destined for Ferrari reserves grow and manages to surprise with an absolutely elegant evolution, made its own by a sparkling wine that has already carved out a place of honor in Italian and non-Italian excellence production.

For fans of sparkling Chardonnay it is an edition that goes beyond the cult already represented by the Riserva del Fondatore and the unique, rare and particularly coveted event, an icon and a reference wine for the whole territory able to stand up to comparison with the most famous Champagne.

Its story begins with Mauro Lunelli (one of the three sons of Bruno that the company from Giulio Ferrari), who of his own free will keep for about eight years some special thousandths, which, once shared with the two brothers Franco and Gino, they created, in 1980, the Riserva del Fondatore: a special label to be produced only in the best vintages, dedicated to Giulio Ferrari. The story continues enriching itself with successes and awards, which raise this label to the Olympus of world bubbles and which, only in very few years, is pushed to levels of refinement never reached by Italian sparkling wine.

In fact, there are only three vintages of the Giulio Ferrari Collezione: after 1995 and 1997, here is the 2001, considered after a long period of reflection and internal evaluation by the Ferrari Cellars to be a suitable vintage to become history.

A regular vintage with good alternation between individual, sun exposure and temperature variations, the harvest at Maso Pianizza took place gradually to select the best batches of Chardonnay from which to undertake the long journey towards absolute glory.

The 18 years of average permanence on the lees, in fact, helps this Chardonnay in purity to develop an elegance and a unique structure, from the visual examination, with its very fine and persistent perlage, to the taste-olfactory one.

Defining the latter broad can be an understatement: peach and pineapple stand out in the complexity of the bouquet alternating with marked salty and spicy references, reminiscent of cardamom and ginger, to continue on the tertiary notes of caramel and sweet flours. In the mouth there is a lively and dynamic energy, a never tame freshness that envelops an elegant minerality, then gives way to an infinite persistence.

Giulio Ferrari Collezione 2001 was produced in 2001 in boxed bottles: very rare and unique, an honor to have it in your collection and access the exclusive club of the same name.
