Frescobaldi - Luce della Vite

Frescobaldi - Luce della Vite

Tuscany

Seven hundred years of history, more than thirty generations, an annual production of about seven million bottles and 1500 hectares of vineyards scattered throughout Tuscany, from Chianti to Montalcino, passing through the Maremma: the numbers of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi winery are impressive and already tell enough about the importance this family had and still has in Italian winemaking.

Already famous in 1300 for their proximity to Dante Alighieri, the generations have handed down over the centuries ambition, creativity and pursuit of excellence in many fields, from poetry to music and finally to viticulture, with the contribution of Ferdinando, Leonardo and Vittorio Frescobaldi in elevating Tuscany to a place of excellence during the twentieth century.

They’ve been the first to introduce – in 1855 – international vines in Tuscany (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), they’be been responsible for the construction of the first Italian winery exploiting natural gravity for decanting the barrels (Pomino, 1894), more recently (1990s) have introduced the first blend of Sangiovese and Merlot – which takes the name of Luce – in their Montalcino estate. In short, innovators by vocation who experiment starting from a solid knowledge of the territory and tradition. The Marquises de’ Frescobaldi represent an immovable piece of Tuscan and Italian wine history, made up of an impeccable mix of entrepreneurial vision, local roots and extraordinary expertise in the vineyard and in the cellar. Today owners and tenants of some of the most important estates in Italy where iconic wines now famous all over the world are produced, Frescobaldi interpret the diversity of Tuscany in every estate, vineyard and wine.

Born from an idea of Vittorio Frescobaldi and the famous Californian producer Robert Mondavi, Luce della Vite wants to overcome the tradition of Montalcino without denying it, rather by building on the experience of the two winemaking families to create excellent and exclusive wines, capable of going beyond the classic Montalcino borders and talk to the world.

Inspired by the shining sun placed on the altar of the Basilica of Santo Spirito in Florence, built around 1600 on a piece of land donated to the church by the Frescobaldi family, Tenuta Luce della Vite dominates Montalcino with its geometrically perfect rows cultivated with respect for the surrounding nature.

Sangiovese for an amazing Brunello, but also Supertuscan based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon make the production of this splendid Frescobaldi estate truly great.

  • As the best French (indeed, Bordeaux) tradition hands down the use of producing the so-called “second vin” by the most important wineries, those whose wines are in the history of enology, Tenuta Luce of Marchesi Frescobaldi also aligns with this tradition proposing Lucente, the younger brother of Luce, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot able to express immediately and in a very pleasant way that contemporary style that many look for in a red wine on certain occasions.

The style is confirmed to be the one of Tenuta Luce: although it is a “second vin”, this is not noticed either with reference to the practices in the vineyard, always well organized and rigorous in the best Frescobaldi style nor in the cellar, where fermentation in stainless steel thermo-conditioned tanks with a maceration on the skins for three weeks is followed by aging in partly new and partly used barriques for twelve months.

The 2018 vintage is considered to be of high quality: although characterized by above-average rainfall in winter and a humid spring with rainfalls during the key phases of vegetative development, the summer has been regular, progressively providing more and more excursion between day and night and allowing to reach harvest (respectively on 10th September for Merlot and 1st October for Sangiovese) with healthy grapes and a relevant aromatic outfit.

In tasting Lucente 2018 presents itself with an intense and crystalline ruby color, introducing an olfactory bouquet that eyes the fresh forest fruit (currant, blackberry) but also to prune and red plum, to roasting nuances such as vanilla and tobacco and with slight earthy notes. On the palate it is direct, full and enveloping, with soft and elegant tannins flanked by a pleasant freshness and veiled minerality, before a long closure with a fruity return.

Lucente confirms Frescobaldi’s ability to draw the best from the territory (in this case the beautiful and uncontaminated area west of Montalcino) to offer an elegant and seductive wine, capable of adapting well to many situations, offered by Winefully in the most exclusive Magnum format.

  • Luce is the first wine to be obtained from a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from the land of Brunello di Montalcino. It is the result of a collaboration between the Marchesi de ’Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi families, the fruit of wanting to combine the typical softness of Merlot with the structure and elegance of Sangiovese.

Since 2002 the property has passed to Lamberto Frescobaldi, who continues to produce this Super Tuscan that is enjoyed all over the world, combining the tradition of Sangiovese with the innovation of Merlot.

A deep, ruby red, the nose is intense and complex; the fruit compote, sour cherries, plum and blackberry cede to slightly spicy, balsamic and aromatic herbal notes. The second nose gives us tertiary perfumes such as liquorice, vanilla and leather. In the mouth it is enveloping and well-structured, with smooth tannins that reveal a beautiful, articulated and warm texture. The fruity persistence of Merlot is remarkable and does not overwhelm, thanks to the structure offered by Sangiovese.

This wine enchants in the glass with its beautiful, bright ruby red. This Brunello provides rich sensations during the olfactory examination, opening with fruity notes of cherries in spirits, cassis, blackberries, black mulberry and then moving on to hints of spices, with balsamic and Mediterranean shrubs. This casket of Tenuta Luce from the Frescobaldi vineyard contains two wines that are symbols of the company: Luce 2016 and Luce Brunello 2014. Luce was the first wine to be obtained from a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot in the land of Brunello di Montalcino, while Luce Brunello is the symbol of the area.

The 2016 vintage was characterised by a steady, temperate climate and moderate rainfall. Luce 2016 is of a deep ruby red and possesses an aromatic profile centred on fresh and ripe dark berries. The sip is soft and satisfying, with smooth and elegant tannins that are clearly present but not overwhelming. This is a direct wine with a good balance between freshness, fruitiness, softness and tannic texture.

Luce Brunello 2014 is a bright ruby-red in the glass. This wine immediately releases fruity notes of cherries in liqueur, cassis, blackberries and black mulberry and then moves on to spicy hints, with hues of balsamic and Mediterranean shrubs. Such is the pleasantness of the bouquet that it makes you want to go back to also take in those tertiary notes that are typical of a great Sangiovese. In the mouth, the wine reveals its aristocratic, deep, gloomy, introspective being, with a touch of minerality. A savoury, soft sip, without excesses or sharp edges. In a word: harmonious.

  • This is the Tenuta della Luce’s most recent wine – 2015 is the first vintage on the market – and a Cabernet Sauvignon to which a small percentage of Sangiovese is added, to give an international grape an indigenous imprint.

From the first sip it provides unique sensations that make it a collector’s wine. Of a concentrated ruby red, this wine moves slowly in the glass, as if to foreshadow the velvety sip that follows. The bouquet opens immediately with spicy notes, vanilla, cardamom and cloves, softened by notes of ripe black berries and compotes. In the mouth it is decisive and demonstrates its character, given to it by a dense and decisive tannic texture that does not prevaricate, and which echoes the freshness that provides unequalled drinking pleasure. The retro-gustatory sensations bring to mind ripe fruit and some spicy sensations, as well as great persistence.
