Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno

Conterno. Sometimes a word is enough to make people understand the importance of the topic being discussed, and this is certainly the case. But sometimes this single word sets the tone for a series of arguments, stimulates curiosity and the desire to go beyond what is commonly known about a particular topic, perhaps without preconceptions or reverence. Because at the very end Conterno (Giacomo) is here to tell us his story, which began in the second half of the nineteenth century when he emigrated far from Northern Italy to seek his fortune, down to Argentina. Back in the early twentieth century due to a series of family vicissitudes, it was 1908 when Giovanni Conterno and his three sons started a tavern producing wine in San Giuseppe, a hamlet of Monforte d’Alba. The looming of the great war asked to one of the sons, Giacomo, to proudly serve his country, so once back he concentrated on developing wine production by purchasing grapes from third-party producers and founding the Giacomo Conterno company. His ultimate goal was to create a great wine in his name, the one that was then named Barolo Extra. His visionary project was based on the belief that it was possible to change the Langhe by offering quality wines produced only in certain vintages and released after a long aging in the cellar: an idea so new and unconventional that it fascinated also other winemakers who, over the years and following the example of the forerunner, have then contributed to the greatness of the Langhe and Barolo. From 1974 onwards, with the purchase of the Cascina Francia vineyard and the switch to the utilization of own grapes only, the “Conterno Giacomo Azienda Vitivinicola di Giovani Conterno”, became a complete winemaking company: traditional, because the innovations introduced by previous generations were maintained and farsighted in considering new investment opportunity.

Conterno processes grapes which are typical of Langhe such as Nebbiolo, brought to history thanking to labels like Monfortino, but also Barbera, produced in Cascina Francia, the vineyard from which everything continues. Everything is splendidly traditional at Conterno: great attention in the vineyard to enhance yields, elimination of excess bunches, harvest in the best period, while in the cellar long macerations on the skins are carried out in large vats with submerged cap, before a slow ageing in large barrels. About sixty thousand bottles produced in 17 hectares located in Cascina Francia, Cerretta and Arione: it is superfluous to mention the emotions aroused by these wines in enthusiasts, collectors and investors. It is also superfluous to linger while waiting to make them yours.

  • A legend in the bottle: historically the Monfortino drowned interest domestically and abroad for many reasons, starting with its immense quality, the incredible longevity and indeed a continuous evolution in the bottle over the years. A product loved and sought after by connoisseurs, by those who want to try it at least once in their life, by collectors who cannot miss to have it in their cellar and also by investors, historically attracted by the ability to increase its value once released on the market against a demand that always and by far exceeds the current offer of nine/ten thousand bottles per year. Monfortino is the essence of Langhe and Barolo, a timeless classic that is now part of the Olympus of wine thanking to its strenuous pursuit to perfection through a rigorous respect for the Piedmontese winemaking traditions.

A myth that began in 1924 when the name “Monfortino” was used for the first time to remark the origin of the Barolo Extra bottled at that time from Monforte d’Alba area. However, this wine becomes complete only in 1978 following the acquisition of the fourteen hectares of Cascina Francia by the Conterno family and the implantation of Nebbiolo, officially ceasing the purchase of grapes from third parties (a successful practice that brought to this wine anyway) and finally working exclusively with own grapes.

Today the fruits used for Monfortino generally come from the same parcels located in vineyards with a South/South-West exposure at an altitude of 400/450 meters. The vines are medium dense with about 4000 plants per hectare and are left with only one bunch per branch for a weigth of approx three hundred grams. The cellar practices are traditional, time consuming and complex as handed down from father to son. Today Roberto Conterno takes care of it as the interpreter of a family tradition who deserves the merit to keepi the armor of Monfortino always shiny, capable to withstand any challenge that the multifaceted world of wine is able to pose. A wine for which both possession and tasting have an experiential and elitist meaning, which makes selection and the lucky protagonists proud.

It is believed that consuming it immediately would be almost a crime but surely there is somebody willing to take the risk; for all the others, it is known that the Monfortino is never in a hurry and improves over the years, likely many.

  • A historical bottle that has distinguished the Conterno winery for many years, since the 14 hectares of Cascina Francia located in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba were purchased and planted in 1974, 11 today dedicated to Barolo and Riserva Monfortino. From then the story of the Conterno growers, landowners and far-sighted entrepreneurs who made the fortune of Barolo in the world began. An iconic, sought-after wine, appreciated all over the world that lives beside a monolith like the Riserva but which is well able to follow an own path made of a different complexity and breadth, noble thickness and texture and which are very successful also beyond the national borders.

The Serralunga cru is historically peculiar: it generates austere wines that need time to smooth out their power but also able to prompty transmit a clear elegance and finesse thanking to a great balance that the skilled and expert hands of Roberto Conterno guarantee harvest after harvest. Tasting is an emotional experience that is not easily forgotten, starting with the behavior in the glass, where the wine is protagonist of a dance that favors the roundness of the crystal, drawing arches with perfect concavity. The nose immediately releases its amplitude, ranging from hints of cherry to red fruits such as currant, from undergrowth to autumn leaves, from leather to toasted notes that overlap with a sweet spiciness. Powerful, immediate, vertical in the mouth but undoubtedly elegant and fascinating, absolutely fine and pleasantly persistent, with a closure that accompanies the taster for a long time.

Giacomo Conterno is myth and history, both viscerally intertwined with Barolo and with the exceptional yields that Nebbiolo grants from the crus of Serralunga. However, it would be unfair and inappropriate to overlook that the purchase, back in 1974, of Cascina Francia 14 hectares plot in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba led to the dedicate three hectars of this farm to Barbera. Few years later, part of the newly purchased Cerretta cru was also dedicated to this grape, a true protagonist of Piedmontese winemaking history, confirming the importance, passion and respect granted by the family.

Excellent preconditions for a grape and a wine that today are a historical pillar of this winery, showing to the world that it knows well how to make an absolutely out of class Riserva (Monfortino) but also that it works both Barolo and Barbera in an outstanding way. Each wine is a champion, a forerunner, a mix of unique and continuous emotions and Barbera d’Alba does not behave differently, indeed it diligently follows the path to perfection traced today by Roberto Conterno.

The expectations of a taster placed in front of a Barbera are inevitably different compared to a Barolo: there are many reasons not to consider here but even though such preconditions are respectful, Conterno blows up the counter by proposing a complex Barbera, very far away from the expectations of the crowd. It is a wine that has a structured and ample olfactory bouquet, which easily ranges from flowers such as violets and even lavender to hints of red fruit jam, above all raspberry, then moving taster’s perception to sweet spices and mineralnotes. The sip is fresh and with soft tannins, certainly mineral and well balanced by the softness, with impeccable management of the high alcohol content.

The closure is still fresh, fine and persistent, anticipating the re-fill of new glass and toast to a reacquired conviviality. The 2018 vintage was excellent, currently in the annals as one of the best of the 2000s: a key premise not to delay in getting a 1.5l format of this winemaking excellence by Conterno.

The latest arrval in the Conterno family, Barolo Arione immediately and rightfully entered the Olympus of Langa with a powerful and at the same time elegant interpretation of a special cru located on the southern border of the municipal territory of Serralunga, adjacent to Cascina Francia. It was 2014 when Roberto Conterno decided to invest a large sum to acquire the nine hectares of the Arione vineyard from the Rosso brothers of Castiglione Falletto: at that time there was a lot of buzz on the deal but it must be said that this is Langhe and the heart of Barolo, an area that sees a few hectares available to many winemakers that inevitably compete for the best plots.

Years go by and generations follow one another but Conterno Giacomo never goes wrong with a wine: in fact since the 2015 vintage Barolo Arione has become a new cult on the market like the more historica Barolo Francia. Shorter oak-ageing than Riserva but always well beyond the average of many other producers, Arione does not deviate from the tradition of the territory and immediately reveals a great elegance and intensity, which is expected to evolve more and more over time.

With a garnet color still not full and with clear ruby nuances, concentrated but sinuous in the glass, it opens up to the taster very direct, ranging from floral notes of dried violet to fruits like black and blueberry, sweet spices and blond tobacco with mineral and undergrowth notes. In the mouth it is direct as well, powerful, never aggressive and in any case austere, as per tradition. The tannin is fully bodied, solid, those that  can only improve over time but already well fine. The acidity is balanced and still very present, the minerality is present but without disturbing while the closure is well prolonged and pleasant in depth. A Barolo with a great present and a great future for those who will have the patience to wait for it. Already a must-to-have for unbridled collectors also motivated by the great 2016 vintage, it is a new entry by Conterno that certainly cannot be missed.
