Montevertine

Montevertine

Tuscany

The Montevertine estate is located in the municipality of Radda in Chianti in the province of Siena where we find the typical vines of the Chianti area: sangiovese, canaiolo and colorino.
Sangiovese in this area has unique expressions: fine and elegant, it focuses on “pinoteggianti” notes, with a slightly garnet color, full fruit, blood orange typical of this area and black spice. The resulting wine, therefore, is complex both in the nose and in the mouth; it has a great vertical freshness, a strong sapidity and is more drinkable than structured, even if it has great longevity. A unique product of its kind.
The company was bought in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, with the initial intention of renovating it and making it his holiday home, planting a few hectares of vineyards to produce wine for himself and loved ones. But already in 1971, given the results, the first wine was produced and marketed, with immediate recognition from national critics.
Strengthened by the feedback obtained, and therefore confident of the potential of the terroir, Sergio decides to devote himself exclusively to the production of quality wines, planting new vineyards and setting up new cellars.
The success he achieved exceeded the wildest expectations. Today, just drinking a glass of Pergole Torte, of any vintage, makes us enter a world of its own, that of Montevertine, made up of Sergio and his son Martino and the corporate oenologists Giulio Gambelli and Bruno Bini.
In fact, the Montevertine wines contain the pride of these men, their love for the Tuscan land and for their vineyards and the magic of one of the most beautiful and significant terroirs in the world. First with Sergio and now with his son Martino, the company has consolidated the bond between Sangiovese and its place of choice, Chianti, to become an extraordinary interpreter and loyal guardian of this extraordinary variety.

  • The Montevertine is the great character among the Sangiovese Chianti, expressed in one of its best forms. From an area – Radda in Chianti – known for the finesse and elegance of its wines, this evokes many of the characteristics of Pinot Noir when tasted blind.

Montevertine is the historic wine of the company, produced between 1971 and 1981 as Chianti Classico Montevertine, and since 1982, following its exit from the Chianti Classico Consortium, simply as Montevertine. From selected Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino grapes, it ages for two years in Slavonian oak barrels. The Colorino endows it with colour and floweriness; Canaiolo, on the other hand, lets us perceive the fruit and helps to support the tannin and freshness of the Sangiovese.

The grapes come from a 2.5-hectare vineyard, filled with rows that enjoy south-easterly and southern exposure. The harvest is conducted manually.

Its colour is of low intensity, but of great vivacity and brightness. Interesting notes of red fruits on the nose mingle with the interplay of dark and fresh spices, such as liquorice. It concludes with a herbaceous finish reminiscent of undergrowth, ranging from ferns to mosses.

Its texture is complex, full and enveloping, structured by clear and marked tannin. This is a wine of good persistence. The freshness, especially in its youth, is clear – leaving it for some time in the cellar will achieve a balance that reminds us of Le Pergole Torte, the company’s flagship product.

  • Produced for the first time with the 1977 vintage, Le Pergole Torte was the first pure Sangiovese vinified in the Radda area in Chianti.

The grapes come from the historic vineyards of the Montevertine company, planted between 1968 and 1999, covering about 2.5 hectares within the 18 owned by the company.

Since 1981, together with the company’s other wines, Le Pergole Torte has left the Chianti guidelines behind to continue its oenological journey outside of the standards set by the consortium.

Since 1982, the labels have been designed by the artist Alberto Manfredi, a longtime friend of Sergio’s, who liked to depict stylised, attractive ladies’ faces with simple brushstrokes. Since his death, his drawings, which are preserved in the old archives, have been used every year to remember him.

When you sample this Super Tuscan the colour emerges as a ruby red – quite light from the chromatic point of view – with light garnet reflections.

This is a complex Sangiovese, and we perceive it in the nose: from notes of red fruits, which recall the characteristic blood orange of the area, as well as pepper and cloves, to the delicate notes of cocoa and toasty notes. The finish is fresh, with a hint of graphite.

The sip is elegant and fine, but also powerful and decisive. The refined structure encompasses fresh and soft, savoury and velvety contrasts, from which no winner will ever emerge. The winners, really, are those who taste it and are captivated by its great beauty.
