Giuseppe Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli

Veneto

It is said that quality wine is a profound expression of the territory that generated it and the hands of those who cultivated it. Sometimes, this is even truer when it refers to special artisans who have interpreted the land and its vineyards differently, sensing potential and nuances never perceived before.

This is what happened with Giuseppe Quintarelli, the prince of Amarone, who brought this Valpollicella wine – young in terms of its denomination (it has been a DOCG wine only since 2010) but already rich in history – to international fame.

Humble and reserved, Bepi – as his friends called him – transformed the farm founded in Negrar by his father Silvio in the early twentieth century into a large cellar, a point of reference for the entire Valpollicella area.

Quintarelli, who passed away in 2012, was a sensitive and brilliant craftsman, imbued with a traditionalist spirit in the vineyard and in the cellar. He was, however, also open to innovation, without prejudice. For example, he pioneered the introduction of vines such as Nebbiolo and Cabernet Franc into Valpolicella.

The cellar, restored after Bepi’s passing, is currently led by his daughter Fiorenza with her husband and children, who continue to follow Giuseppe’s footsteps, maintaining the name of a now legendary figure who – in the words of Luigi Veronelli – created wines ‘before which one would spontaneously kneel and commemorate poets’.

  • Giuseppe Quintarelli’s Amarone Riserva comes to life only in exceptional years, and 1988, 1990, 1995, 2003, 2007, 2011 are among the most famous vintages.

A collector’s item (often recommended as a pure investment), this wine is a true jewel coveted for its unique characteristics that make it perfect, unrepeatable and inimitable.

This majestic wine already announces itself with the label, the precious and refined character of which represents the traditions – always respected – that distinguish the Quintarelli winery.

Robust and at the same time sensual, the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva by Giuseppe Quintarelli comes from a blend of Corvina, Croatina, Rondinella, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

To preserve the quality of the grapes, the harvest in this magical place in the Negrar valley is carried out strictly by hand, supported with wooden boxes (as tradition teaches).

Following fermentation at a controlled temperature for about 45 days, it then ages in barriques for 7 years.

The result is unique: an explosion of aromas that will only improve over time. The nose opens with a range of aromas that hint at dried fruit, cherries, plums and red berries, to then suggest notes of truffles and chocolate.

On the palate it is nothing short of exciting: structured, warm, enveloping and with a charmingly spicy aftertaste that lasts, prolonging a pleasant sensation even after tasting.

Impossible not to desire it… anyone who loves wine will be enchanted by Amarone Riserva Quintarelli.

  • Complexity, intensity of aromas, refined elegance and long ageing potential are just some of the qualities of the Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. An undisputed monument to Valpolicella, it is a point of reference for anyone who wants to approach this wine.

Some have even called this Amarone legendary, and so it is…

Far from the logic of the market, this wine allows itself all the time it needs to be unique.

A blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and other grapes, Amarone Classico is vinified only in the best vintages. Seven years of ageing in oak barrels give this Amarone a uniqueness that can be perceived even before it is tasted.

The intense scent foreshadows notes of liquorice, rhubarb, vanilla and ripe fruits, such as cherry and plum. Of a ruby red colour, it is limpid and glossy: this, too, reveals its strong but refined character.

It demands to be tasted, and its full, round, enveloping and persistent taste is the apotheosis of pleasure! Soft and delicate tannins enhance a great harmony of flavours.

This is undoubtedly a red wine for important moments, but also a wine to meditate on, that must be tasted slowly in order to indulge in the countless emotions that only Amarone Quintarelli can provoke.

  • The mere mention of Giuseppe Quintarelli brings to mind the perfection of wines from the land of Valpolicella: Amarone, Superiore, Recioto and then Rosso del Bepi, Primofiore and Bianco Secco. However, it is essential to remember that though Quintarelli, a great man of the land – and the cellar – is firmly anchored to the traditions of his land, he also saw potential that was hidden from most. Making Amarone terrific has never stopped him from experimenting and looking to the future, to the new challenges of oenology related to comparisons on international markets and to progressive changes in the tastes of new generations. Among the first to introduce allochthonous Italian and international vines to Valpolicella, with his constant studying and a broad vision of oenology that is capable of overcoming local boundaries, today he provides us with a truly unique Veronese-style Bordeaux blend.

Born of a forgotten parcel that was then taken up again and brought to yield Cabernet and Merlot, at an altitude of 350 metres in the Negrar area, on calcareous-basaltic soils, Alzero is a ‘Bordeaux Amarone’ in the sense that the most famous red Girondine grapes follow a similar path to Corvina & Co., from the vineyard to the barrel.

After a manual harvest at the end of August, as in the case of Amarone, the grapes are placed on racks and wooden boxes in the loft, where a slow drying process begins that lasts until the end of the year. Everything happens very slowly, without haste: what is being produced here is one of the best and perhaps least known Italian reds, so patience and maximum care are required during the pressing, fermentation and maceration phases before the (first) passage in casks and natural ageing for five long years.

The tast will confirm that you are holding a glass of great wine in your hand, different from Amarone in terms of colour, concentration and nose but broad in all its nuances and with a very long finish that is also well suited to meditation.

A small number of bottles of Alzero are produced, generally less than 5000, and only in vintages of high-quality yield, such as 2011. It is therefore impossible not to jealously guard it in your collection, just like the stamp dedicated to Bepi Quintarelli from the Republic of San Marino in 2005.

  • The Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella represents all of this family’s values: the love, heart and soul of those who want to make an uncompromising, artisanal wine – as its handwritten labels on fine cork suggest; so gentle and unusual, a true masterpiece.

Recioto Quintarelli was born in vineyards located in the municipality of Negrar, in the Veneto region. The harvest and selection of the grapes – mainly Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Cabernet, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Croatina – is done exclusively, scrupulously by hand, during each phase of processing. After the harvest, the grapes are dried for about 120 days and then given ‘the time they need’ to refine, 5 or 6 years in small Slovenian oak barrels.

The result is another jewel to be tasted on important occasions, to be sipped slowly so one can appreciate all of its precious characteristics.

The colour is very intense, a garnet red with ruby reflections. Scents of black cherries are clearly distinguishable, as well as an elegant and refined sweetness that is also found on tasting, and which is further enriched by refined, spicy nuances. A velvety, elegant wine with a good, persistent tannic structure.

Recioto Giuseppe Quintarelli once again confirms the excellence of this brand.

  • This wine is piece of Italian winemaking history: the Selezione is a special Amarone from 2000, dedicated to Giuseppe Quintarelli by the whole Quintarelli family to thank him for his work in respecting quality and tradition.

The 2000 vintage was the last to be brought by Bepi himself from the vineyard to the cellar, to produce a jewel of a wine – there are only 4,016 bottles (110 magnum only!), making it a real collector’s item. This wine is capable of improving as it ages in a way that few other wines are.

It has a characteristic organoleptic profile (as Amarone demands) but is, at the same time, original.

In the glass it has the typical, rather deep garnet-red colour that distinguishes Amarone. The aroma is intense and varied, reminiscent of bitter almonds with an aftertaste tending to black cherry and cherry. And in the mouth… it is elegant, refined, powerful, warm and persistent.

The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2000 Selezione is undoubtedly an important and demanding wine. Sipping such a wonder takes time, and appreciating it also requires a little knowledge of its history. Only then can one grasp all its characteristics, without neglecting the smallest detail.

    Unrivalled Venetian excellence.
