Tassi

Fabio Tassi is a well-known character in Montalcino: a successful entrepreneur and winemaker, he has been dedicated from many years to a small production of very high quality wine now in the world limelight also thanking to an international criticism that has never spared praise, especially in recent years.
The winery was founded about twenty years ago focused to produce wines with personality and character such as to be understood as unicum linked to seasonality and therefore to vineyard yields from the beginning.
There are several vineyards that express themselves in single cru wines, all of limited production and of very high quality: Franci, Tassi, Colombaiolo, Greppino are all small plots for a total of approximately seven hectares and an estimated production of forty thousand bottles each year.
Planted around 240 meters high on sea level, the various vineyards are exposed to the South-West and insist on loamy-clay soils with a strong presence of verrucana stone, that helps to increase their permeability. The climate of the area is very favorable for quality viticulture, guaranteeing strong temperature variations between day and night and protection from the cold winds that blow from the north. With an organic vineyard management, Tassi has always focused on making the individual plots express the best, translating the climatic trend of the season into the bottle together with the peculiarities of the vineyards.
The result is more and more surprising year after year: all the wines of Tassi, starting with an exuberant Rosso di Montalcino to continue with the diferent Brunellos and then 100-pt awarded Riserva Franci are elegant, not homologated, alive and vibrant, they very well transmit the flavors of Montalcino land together with the aromas and taste of tradition but being different and evolving, never static as it is Fabio, a volcanic entrepreneur devoted to continuous growth with the aim to transform Tassi into a reference for Brunello.

  • Translating Fabio Tassi’s vision into the bottle and then into the glass is an exercise that leads to understanding the desire to leave a mark by producing wines with a strong varietal and territorial personality, wines certainly not homologated but able to speak the language (or the dialect) of the territory which they belong to, made up of small plots and individual crus that give life to small productions of absolute excellence.

The Brunello di Montalcino Colombaio is another proven proof: produced with low yield grapes carefully harvested in the extra small 0.9 hectare vineyard out of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, on clayey soils with strong presence of limestone where the exposure and the thermic excursions grant optimal yields and a high quality of grapes, the Brunello di Montalcino macerates for two/three weeks in contact with the skins before being decanted into 700-liter tonneaux where it matures for two years and half.

The 2016 vintage, same as 2015’s one, is universally recognized as exceptional, a year that recalls the qualitative peaks reached in 1990. The weather has been really mild over the months, following the seasons well and ensuring rain in the right periods, without generating water stress in the summer even in that most difficult place which is the area south of Montalcino.

The result is of superior quality: acidity, structure and elegance confirm the excellence of the harvested grapes and the great aging potential.

To the taster the Brunello Colombaio presents with an intense ruby color with garnet reflections, introducing a complex and decidedly fruity bouquet to the nose with clear hints of blackberry jam, followed by a spiciness that brings back to cloves and to clear toasted notes of coffee and cedar wood, with a balsamic touch. On the sip it immediately proves to be well balanced, fresh and with a well integrated tannin which however portends a good aging potential. Pleasant and refined in the mouth, it closes the sip dry, an antechamber of an elegant persistence that never seems to fade.

With an extremely limited production, the Brunello di Montalcino Colombaio perfectly conveys the philosophy of its creator, allowing to discover a characteristic and strongly territorial approach to the Montalcino world.

The Brunello Colombaio is part of a series of first-rate labels that Winefully enthusiastically proposes to its customers in order to fully get to know Brunello di Montalcino and its limited productions of superior quality.

The Brunello di Montalcino Giuseppe Tassi is another tangible proof, this time adorned by the special homage to Fabio’s father: produced with low yield grapes carefully harvested in the small 2.8 hectare vineyard out of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, on clayey soils enriched by the presence of minerals (manganese, iron, magnesium), protected by Mt. Amiata and conducted in an organic regime, the Brunello di Montalcino ferments ion cement vats in contact with the skins unlike Fabio’s other great wines before being decanted into 700-liter tonneaux where it matures for two years and half.

To the taster the Brunello Giuseppe Tassi clearly plays another game if compared to other crus, presenting with an intense ruby color and introducing a complex bouquet to the nose where jam fruits such as red plum and sour cherry stand out, flanked by candied orange peel and a sweet spice reminding tobacco and leather, with a hint of menthol at the end. On the palate it is powerful, austere, serious but absolutely balanced, with a silky tannin and a marked minerality. Warm and muscular in the mouth, it closes the sip with a decisive persistence and a pleasant aftertaste that recalls cloves.
