Terlano

Terlano

Founded in 1893 by 24 small winemakers operating in a context of great economic and social difficulties, the cooperative Cantina Terlano has grown over time by operating with attention, quality and rigor in fully exploiting the area’s vocation for viticulture and, specifically, for the production of white wines.
It all started when the reds were the most produced wines, while proportions are now completely overturned, with a production concentrated for 70% on white wines. Terlano has been an area dedicated to grapes for millennia: leaving aside prehistory and getting closer to the present day, the many winegrowers who then joined the winery, which today has more than 140 members managing 190 cultivated hectares, have historically appreciated and exploited the special terroir of this area, made up of unique soils made of quartz porphyry of ancient volcanic origin mixed with sands and clays forcing the vines to react to conditions of general stress and to develop specific characteristics, and of mixed altitudes that allow the cultivation of different varieties depending on the altitude, reaching even 900 meters above sea level; additionally, a mild climate of sub-Mediterranean type thanks to the protection guaranteed by the Alps and the natural exposure to the South/South-West.
This is indeed a structured but also fascinating mix of environmental factors, even more if combined with the preparation, ability and skill of the master cellarmen (kellermeister) who followed one another. In fact, Cantina Terlano is the home of the so-called “Stocker method”, named after one of the most important and long-lived winemakers of the winery who, following the French example, decided to let some wines age on fine lees for a long time, but using 2,500-liter steel barrels and applying a minimal pressure, starting long aging practice now applied to white grapes such as Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, in purity or in blend and for periods between ten to thirty years.
In Terlano the vines that have found a home in South Tyrol with exceptional yields are brought to the maximum of their aromatic potential and distinguish themselves by an absolutely surprising longevity, a factor that confirms how much quality can be found in this cooperative winery that is not afraid to step on the most important international stages proposing wines that are very hard to forget.

  • Now become an internationally renowned Sauvignon, Quarz is one of the most popular wines of Cantina Terlano, strongly linked (in name and in fact) to the typical terroir of the vine growing area and has become a unique and lovely aging expression of an international grape that has found an exceptional habitat in South Tyrol.

Cultivated at variable heights between 330/350 meters above sea level, the vineyards with South / South-West exposure on slopes that often reach 40% present yields limited to 40 quintals per hectare and insist on quartz porphyry of volcanic origin on which sits a mixed soil rich in clays, draining and not very nutritious: all aspects that translate into a high minerality and richness in the glass.

After careful manual selection and gentle pressing, the grapes ferment slowly at a controlled temperature in steel and then only half are transferred to barrels where they rest for 9 months on their own lees before being blended three months before bottling.

The 2019 vintage was mixed from a climatic point of view, with a very mild end of winter followed by a fluctuating spring, with an unusually low average temperature in May. Summer then came abruptly, with high temperatures and scorching heat that greatly accelerated the growth of the grapes, slowing down between July and August also thanks to some useful rainfall that allowed wider temperature excursions. The Sauvignon was then harvested from the beginning of September with grapes at an optimal state of ripeness, a favorable omen about the quality of the vintage.

When tasting Quarz has a greenish yellow color and an intriguing olfactory bouquet that ranges from exotic fruit (and not) attributable to papaya, mango, pink grapefruit to herbaceous notes of lemongrass, green tea and mint, with a clear mineral presence of flint. In the mouth thre’s great harmony thanking to a meticulous balance between the bursting minerality and freshness and a pleasant glycerine contribution, before a persistent closure that anticipates a fruity and mineral aftertaste.

Elegant, profound and undoubtedly exemplary in its execution, Quarz honors the name of Cantina Terlano by confirming its strong international appeal, even more when in 3 liters size.

  • Many years have passed since the time of kellermeister Sebastian Stocker but the exceptional nature of his discoveries and innovations, later merged into the method of the same name, have become the flagship of Cantina Terlano, whose “Rarity” series is made up of technically complex wines, absolutely special and unforgettable for those who taste them.

From the vineyard to the cellar, Rarity benefits from Cantina Terlano’s best experience and expertise in selecting raw materials and processes of the highest quality and precision to create an extraordinary wine in all its nuances, also considering the age with which it presents itself to the public.

Cultivated in a heroic way at varying heights between 550 and 600 meters above sea level, with slopes between 30% and 50%, the vineyards, with South-West exposure, insist on soils rich in skeleton and clays, draining and not very nutritious sitting on quartz porphyry of volcanic origin: all aspects that translate into a high minerality and tension in the glass.

After a careful manual selection, the grapes ferment slowly at controlled temperature in steel vats then completing the malolactic fermentation in large barrels, where they rest for 12 months before moving with own lees into those pressurized steel tanks that will host them for 11 long years.

The 2008 vintage was difficult from a climatic point of view, with a mild and dry winter followed by a rainy and cold spring and a June characterized by violent rainfalls, then reaching a welcomed stability lasting till the harvest period, delivering grapes of superior quality despite the fluctuating weather trend.

Quality is confirmed by the tasting: bright straw yellow with greenish reflections in the glass, it has a first-rate olfactory bouquet, where herbaceous/floral notes such as camomile and lemon balm are followed by hints of yeast and bread crust, marked notes of flint, dehydrated apricot, bitter cocoa. In the mouth an unexpected freshness emerges considering the age together with a powerful and vigorous sapidity, well balanced by a warm and soft sip, with a very long persistence that invites you to refill the glass to keep an emotion difficult to explain in words.

Rarity in name and in fact: it is a rare privilege to taste such a complex wine, it is also because of the limited production of 3,340 bottles for 2008 vintage, some of which could not be missing in Winefully’s cellar.

  • It is the peak in Cantina Terlano’s production, a very difficult result to achieve given the excellence already achieved with an extraordinary wine such as the Rarity: this does not mean that there is no further room for improvement fully exploited by this cooperative winery delivering sumptuous whites that can compete with the most famous labels.

It is the perfect synthesis, the most authentic expression of the centuries-old tradition of Terlano that brings together the best grapes and crus enhanced every day by the splendid work of the contributing members.

Cultivated at variable heights ranging between 330/350 meters above sea level for Chardonnay and Sauvignon and 550/600 meters for Pinot Bianco the vineyards, with South / South-West exposure, have limited yields of about 35 quintals per hectare. and insist on soils rich in skeleton and clays, draining and not very nutritious sitting on quartz porphyry of volcanic origin: all aspects that translate into a high minerality and richness in the glass.

After careful manual selection, the grapes ferment slowly in 12-hectolitre oak barrels, then completing the malolactic fermentation in traditional tonneaux where they rest for 12 months on their own yeasts.

The 2018 vintage can be defined as “extreme” from a climatic point of view, with a winter rich in snow followed by a rainy spring with cooler temperatures that delayed the awakening of the vines. A second half of spring with above average temperatures alternating with heavy rains anticipated a very hot June which ended with a strong hailstorm that caused damage to the vineyards. The summer then stabilized with a warm climate and no rain, allowing the harvest to begin on 22 August with good quality grapes available.

In tasting the Terlaner I Grande Cuvée shows a bright straw yellow color and a majestic olfactory bouquet, where citrus notes follow hints of aromatic herbs and mountain flowers, white pepper and clear hints of toasting. In the mouth there is a great balance between softness and hardness, despite the young age: undoubtedly present the minerality, it is contrasted by a pleasant glycerine contribution that perfectly accompanies a generous freshness, before a surprisingly persistent closure that makes the sip unforgettable.

Having reached its seventh vintage starting from 2011, Terlaner I Grande Cuvée never ceases to confirm as a world-class mountain white.
