Valentini

Abruzzo

Of noble origins, the Valentini have been settled in the heart of Abruzzo, in Loreto Aprutino, for over four centuries, on rolling hills halfway between the golden beaches of Silvi, Montesilvano and Pescara, and the rugged slopes of the Gran Sasso.
Dedicated to agriculture and wine production, in the mid-seventeenth century they founded one of the oldest winemaking cellars in Italy, creating products that received various awards in 1868 and 1899. Edoardo Valentini guided the family to dedicate itself to producing quality wines by ennobling vines as common in the area as Trebbiano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
The Valentini family operate outside the box and follow the dictates of their noble souls rather than the market. Led by Francesco Paolo today, they have become ambassadors for wine from Abruzzo, presenting distinctive masterpieces produced by the territory only when they are deemed ready to be appreciated.
Sixty-five hectares of vines for 50,000 bottles a year: a very rare ratio on the national and international wine scene, and a symbol of the obsessive attention that Francesco Paolo pays to the production of his wines and the desire to make the best of vineyards with particularly low yields.
The Valentini production philosophy is based entirely on craftsmanship: this definition is unrelated to regulated labels (see organic or biodynamic products) and can be traced back in a wonderfully simple way to respect for the raw materials and the consumer.
In the vineyard, traditions passed down from generation to generation are fully respected: natural products based on copper, sulphur for treatments and manure or green manure for fertilisation, while in the cellar the spontaneous fermentation of the must is awaited without adding yeasts or controlling the temperature in the large oak barrels.
The result? A Trebbiano-based white, a rosé and a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo-based red which are all extraordinary in terms of longevity, olfactory complexity and persistence. Legendary.

  • As noble as the origins of the Valentini family, who have been settled in Abruzzo since the seventeenth century and have contributed a number of prominent personalities to the local community, Trebbiano is one of the most important Italian whites, and was already awarded the title of best wine in Italy in 2011 for the 2007 vintage.

The pinnacle of the expression of one of the most widely cultivated white grapes in central Italy, the Trebbiano di Valentini has deservedly become a legendary wine, one of those to be jealously kept in the cellar and passed on to future generations for wine education purposes. Historically cultivated for hundreds of years in the Aprutino area and by generations of the Valentini family that have followed one another over the centuries, it fully conveys the artisan philosophy of Francesco Paolo, whom we find at the helm of the company today. Manual harvesting, the exclusive use of the best grapes, spontaneous fermentation, indigenous yeasts, uncontrolled temperature, the absence of clarifications or filtrations: these are just some of the typical phases of what is behind this masterpiece, characterised by complexity, generosity and breadth, with a very long, acidic and savoury finish, confirming its great ageing potential.

It contains verticality and momentum that translate into a majestic wine that is direct, powerful but also delicate in its complexity.

Anyone who has preconceived notions about what a pure Montepulciano d’Abruzzo will be like, based on previous experience or others’ ideas or definitions, will have to be prepared to change their mind once they taste this masterpiece by Francesco Paolo Valentini from Loreto Aprutino. This is a wine that deserves a place at the table with the great reds of the world.

This wine is free from the rules of the marketplace and released only when it is considered fully capable of respecting (and reflecting) the raw material from which it is derived: produced only in excellent vintages after a careful manual selection of the best grapes in the area of Aprutino, which have reached perfect phenolic maturity in order to guarantee long aeging, they are then worked in the cellar in a natural way, with the contribution of indigenous yeasts and patient refining – first in the barrel and then in bottle – for at least four long years.

The taste reveals rare complexity and progressive changes and enrichment in the bouquet, thanks to oxygenation, a broad taste and unexpected harmony, and elegantly soft tannins that never dominate, before an endless finish.

Only infinite honesty and respect for the grapes, the territory and a noble family wine tradition can make tasting this wine unforgettable and carve this privilege into one’s memory.

In line with the wine-making traditions of the region, Valentini – the historic producer of excellent rosé wines – does not just conform, with the Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, to the preparation of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with maceration on the skins, but goes much further, in the Valentini style, to become a pinnacle of the power and freshness found but often overlooked in this red grape.

One of only three types of wine produced by this noble family and already considered to be among the 50 best wines in the world in 2016 (vintage 2014), Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is unrivalled among the still rosé wines produced in Italy. This is thanks to the obsessive care that craftsman Francesco Paolo devotes to his wines, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, minimising invasive technology in making wine and using large barrels for both fermentation and ageing.

Primary, secondary and tertiary: all aromas are present, the connoisseur is left with the pleasure of exploring this wine, supported by freshness, softness and minerality, and finally a persistence that is lost in the distant horizon of the Adriatic Sea.

The 2019 vintage is excellent: freshness, warmth and power characterise this sui generis rosé that is radically different from what one would expect of a wine of this type – it is lightyears away from the Provencal school.
