Château Mouton Rothschild

In 1853 Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the Château Mouton, situated on the left bank of the Médoc, and began the process that would eventually lead to this winery becoming one of the biggest names in the Bordeaux region.

In 1922, his great nephew Philippe took over the reins of the domaine and began to make innovative choices, such as bottling the wine directly on the premises and stating this on the label. This decision necessitated enlarging the warehouse, which the architect Charles Siclis was entrusted with. He oversaw the construction of Grand Chai, a spectacular room that is over 100 metres long and 25 metres wide, with a capacity to store over 1000 oak barrels on just one level – a true marvel for its time (1926).
In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé. Between 1988 and 2014 the estate was managed by Philippine de Rothschild, who continued in the footsteps of his predecessors, without being afraid to impose her own style and personality. Today her three children are dedicated to carrying this important and prestigious name into the future.

The Château Mouton Rothschild vineyards extend across 91 hectares of the most typical terroir of the Médoc and are predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. The inimitable style of this domaine’s grand wines is characterised by great class, complexity, elegance and structure.
