Descrizione

Part of the Alliance Vinum project, which sees six of the most important and historic producers of Montepulciano working together to each develop their own cru of Nobile in order to rediscover this wine that is so important in the Tuscan and all-Italian winemaking tradition, Avignonesi’s Poggetto di Sopra, produced in 2016 for its second vintage, best interprets the project’s purpose by proposing itself as a new reference for Nobile understood as a wine that stands out for its elegance and finesse, that interprets well the territory from which it comes with extraordinary aging potential.

Avignonesi has dedicated to this pure Sangiovese project a selected area of its historic estate on the hill of Argiano, where nearly 40-year-old vines insist on silty, calcareous soils where veins of blue clay alternate, about 300 meters above sea level.

The 2016 vintage is also universally acclaimed as exceptional in Montepulciano. A dry and mild winter was followed by a spring with below-average temperatures and a lot of precipitation, which was then offset by a warm and sunny summer with a very breezy September that allowed the grapes, harvested between mid-September and early October, to reach perfect ripeness.

To the taster, Poggetto di Sotto is ruby in color with light garnet hues, introducing a complex bouquet on the nose that opens with hints of wilted violets followed by red fruits such as plum and cherry and then clear herbaceous hints of underbrush and moss but also lavender, thyme and sage. On the palate it proves powerful and elegant, with a remarkable softness given by silky tannins accompanied by a fresh note well balanced by warmth and envelopment in the mouth, with a lingering finish that introduces a pleasant aftertaste of coconut and licorice attributable to aging in wood.

From a production limited to only 3500 bottles and already with an excellent response from international critics, Avignonesi’s Poggetto di Sopra brings to the highest levels a historic wine of Tuscan tradition interpreting at its best a territory where quality viticulture has been rooted for hundreds of years that rightfully contributes to making Italian oenology great in the world.
