Château Ausone is one of the most prestigious icons of Saint-Émilion, with roots dating back to the 13th century.
The château is named in honour of the Latin poet Decimius Magnus Ausonius (AD 310–395), who is believed to have owned a villa near the current site. The Vauthier family, current custodians of this historic estate, manage the property with passion and dedication, representing the eleventh generation of family winemakers. In 2022, Château Ausone made the decision to withdraw from the official Saint-Émilion classification system, although it retained its status as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A through to the 2021 vintage.

The vineyard spans 7.3 hectares, set on a limestone plateau at an altitude of 75 metres with a south-eastern exposure. The soils consist of 90% limestone and 10% clay, encouraging low yields and optimal grape ripening. The vines, averaging around 50 years of age, are cultivated using environmentally friendly methods, with viticultural practices that preserve biodiversity and maintain soil health.

Vinification takes place in small, truncated conical oak vats with temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged for 16–18 months in French oak barrels, 85% of which are new, within a 16th-century cellar. This historic cellar, with walls covered in a rare and valuable mould known as Cladosporium cellare, provides ideal conditions of temperature and humidity for the wine’s maturation.

Château Ausone 2024 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot. On the nose, it reveals complex aromas of ripe red fruits, delicate spices, and floral notes. On the palate, it is distinguished by its elegant structure, silky tannins, and freshness, ensuring excellent ageing potential. Its limited production and meticulous attention to detail make each bottle a truly unique experience for discerning wine lovers.
