The Gaja Barbaresco is one of the most prestigious, elegant and well-known Italian wines in the world, the epitome of a unique and unmistakable style, a true icon amongst Piedmontese and Italian wines.
As evidence of its success and prestige, suffice it to say that the 1985 Barbaresco Gaja was described by Wine Spectator as ‘the best wine ever produced in Italy’.
Intense, soft and velvety, this red wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes selected manually from fourteen different vineyards in the municipalities of Barbaresco and Treiso, a wide range of terroirs that provide it with the countless facets that make it the Barbaresco par excellence.
It must be aged for twelve months in barriques followed by as many months in large barrels, and finally a further year in the bottle before it is ready to be sold. It is unquestionably exciting from the outset, but, as with most Gaja wines, it is recommended that one let it rest in the cellar for a few years to allow its greatness to unfold and mature over time.
In the glass the Barbaresco di Gaja has an intense garnet colour with orange highlights. The nose is clear and determined, with well-defined fragrances of berries, blueberries, cherries, but also floral notes of violets and spicy and mineral notes. Its taste is harmonious and elegant. The tannic texture is balanced and very refined.
