Sub-district of a district: the essence of the zonation done on Mr. Etna, Northern slope, is the small Vigna Sopra il Pozzo located in Contrada Arcuria, 1.5 hectares planted with Nerello Mascalese with a history of its own.

These premises would be already sufficient to recognize in this wine some traits of excellence given the environmental context, the (objective) difficulties in cultivating vines on terraced soils between 600 and 700 meters in height and the great attention paid to enhance the peculiarities of this single parcel, identified since 2004 for its unique characteristics, such as to create a strongly identifying wine thanks to a soil resulting from the continuous alternation of layers of volcanic stone and thick sand (the so-called “rifusa”).

Harvested starting from mid-October, the grapes of Vigna del Pozzo, further selected to reach a yield of about 40 quintals/hectare, undergo a long period of maceration on the skins after spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in oak vats without temperature control. Up to 90 days of patience are required to allow the Nerello Mascalese to translate all its peculiar characteristics into liquid, before racking and subsequent decanting into large barrels for 24 months of aging.

In tasting this son of the volcano demonstrates an extraordinary personality, starting from the color, light ruby ​​red with an orange reflection on the nail, which already makes it particularly captivating. On the nose, the Arcuria Sopra il Pozzo demonstrates its greatness by introducing an ascending climax that starts from the red berries and then continues with candied red orange, herbaceous nuances of anise and rosemary and then the ash of a extinct fireplace. In the mouth it is austere, intense and elegant, with a predominant mineral component supported by a well-balanced acidity and very fine tannins. The role of wood is masterful, present but discreet, confirming a wine that behaves like everything and the opposite of everything.

It is difficult to condense the deepest soul of Etna into a single wine with such an elegant, Burgundian style. Arcuria Sopra il Pozzo is a wine to be discovered, which seduces immediately, becoming a must for the region, but which gradually reveals the many facets of this incredible territory.
