For more than 30 years now, Saffredi has been a reference label in the kaleidoscopic world of Tuscan red wine, part of the group of so-called Supertuscans that has helped hoist the flag of Grosseto’s Maremma to the roof of the world.
Strongly desired by Elisabetta Geppetti to dedicate it to her father Fredi with the help of the great oenologist Giacomo Tachis, this wine comes from a single vineyard located in Pereta, about 250 meters above sea level, on the road from Scansano heading southwest to Magliano in Toscana and then to the Orbetello lagoon. There are 14 hectares dedicated to Saffredi consisting of the so-called old vineyard, planted in 1985 with a southwest exposure, and the new vineyard, dating from 2006, with a southeast exposure, planted on soils with predominantly sandstone, little organic matter and traces of clay.
With a planting density of 4,000 vines/hectare and a yield intentionally limited to 50 quintals, the grapes from the allochthonous vines that make up Saffredi undergo an initial fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of 26 degrees centigrade, with maceration on the skins for up to 45 days before racking into barriques, 70 percent new, where an 18-month aging process begins before bottling and release to the public.
With great elegance in the glass thanks to a dark, concentrated ruby-red robe, the Saffredi’s nose displays a broad bouquet that ranges from notes of wild fruits such as blackberry, black currant and plum to floral hints of violets, continuing with definite notes of lavender, rosemary and mint, then crushed rock, leather and even asphalt and ink. On the sip it is powerful and intense, able to balance its strength delicately thanks to round and silky tannins, as well as an excellent balance between acidity and sapidity before a very long and harmonious closure.
Saffredi is a wine that needs no introduction, it is a certainty in the Tuscan and, specifically, Maremma oenological universe able to confirm itself year after year thanks to the always elegant, graceful but also firm and decisive touch of Elisabetta Geppetti, exceptional Lady of Italian wine.
