“Montevertine” is the great personality of Chianti Sangiovese, expressed in one of its best forms. It comes from an area, Radda in Chinati, known for the finesse and elegance of its wines. It is reminiscent of many of the characteristics of pinot noir when tasted blind.
This is the winery’s historic wine, produced from 1971 to 1981 as Chianti Classico Montevertine and since 1982, following its exit from the Chianti Classico Consortium, simply as Montevertine. From selected Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino grapes, it matures for two years in Slavonian oak barrels. Colorino gives, precisely, color and florality; canaiolo, on the other hand, lets us feel the fruit and helps support the tannin and freshness of the sangiovese.
The grapes come from a vineyard area of 2.5 hectares, defined by rows with southeast and south exposure. Harvesting is done manually.
To the eye, the color is unloaded in intensity, but with great vibrancy and brightness. Interesting red fruit notes on the nose, ample play of black and fresh spices such as licorice. It concludes with an herbaceous finish reminiscent of underbrush, from fern to moss.
Tasting it is a wine with a complex texture, full and enveloping, structured by a present and marked tannin. A wine of good persistence. The freshness especially in youth is clear, leaving it some time in the cellar will achieve the balance reminiscent of “le Pergole torte,” the winery’s flagship product.
