Bruno Giacosa

Winemaker of a generation that is now almost gone, Bruno Giacosa is part of Langhe’s oenological elite, made up of those Barolo and Barbaresco producers who have made this Unesco world heritage site universally great, elected land of Nebbiolo (and not only). The story of Giacosa family treats of cellarmen from Neive already active at the beginning of the twentieth century: despite not being landowners and relying on the conferment of grapes by selected third parties, the generations led by grandfather Carlo, dad Mario and then Bruno have progressively refined the techniques of grape selection and vinification continuing their tradition of making “very good wines” based on Nebbiolo grape which had to age for many years. Giacosa was among the first to practice the zonation by electing “cru” vineyards even before owning any. It was 1967 when Barbaresco Asili and Barolo Vigna Rionda were released while we have to wait till 1982 to see the start of a production with own grapes thanking to the acquisition of famous Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, and then the 1996 for the Asili and Rabajà vineyards.
The intention to make “very good wines” brought Giacosa to focus his efforts in the vineyard (own or from a third party), working on strong yield reductions, foliage and sun exposures and on the enhancement of traditional agriculture while in the cellar there’s room for long macerations on the skins and ageing in large oak barrels, with the utmost attention to quality deciding not to bottle when the fruit of the vintage was not in line with Giacosa’s rigor and the demand.
Although Bruno is not with us anymore since the beginning of 2018, his baton could not pass into better hands, those of his daughter Bruna. Today in charge of approximately twenty hectares of property and the management of third-party confernments, Bruna carries on a family tradition made of passion, discretion and humility, aware of the heavy inheritance received from his father Bruno, an extraordinary winemaker from Langa today glorified by enthusiasts, collectors and even investors.
