Château Montrose

With a centuries-old history that begins well before the famous Napoleonic classification of Bordeaux terroirs dating back to 1855, Château Montrose is one of the most representative wineries of the Saint-Estephe appellation, located a few kilometers north of Pauillac on the banks of the Garonne, in the heart of the Medoc.
Started in 1815 by Théodore Dumoulin with the planting of the first vineyards and the construction of a simple cellar, despite the young age of the vines, Château Montrose was consecrated in 1855 and classified as Deuxième Cru, a key moment for the future of this winery which, from that moment on, began a process of growth reaching up to 95 hectares of extension when Dumoulinpassed away in 1861.
Nourished and enhanced by the work of the Dollfus and Charmolüe families, it has been led since 2006 by the brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who have carried on an incredible project for the renovation of the ancient Bordeaux-style château and the modernization of the winery with the construction of the futuristic barrel cellar.
Château Montrose historically enjoys one of the best exposures in the area, with soils where gravel mixes with sand on top of a clayey layer rich in nutrients that can best retain humidity. Mapped with high precision in parcels between two hectares and a few hundred square meters wide, Château Montrose knows perfectly and is able to take the best out of the micro-terroirs typical of its land extension during blending stage.
With an exclusive production of red wines, Montrose has vineyards composed mostly of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, in progressively lower percentages which are also reflected in the typical composition of the Château’s premier vin.
With an entrepreneurial approach devoted to reducing emissions and enhance sustainability, the cellar is today an example of how tradition and modernity can be combined in a virtuous way, by conducting the vineyard in a non-interventionist way and by adopting highly efficient methodologies in the cellar.
Château Montrose sits by right at the table of the greats of Bordeaux bringing all the specificity of the Saint-Estephe terroir and fully benefiting from the mitigating role played by the nearby Garonne, able to protect the vintages even in the most difficult years.
